“Little Ben” comes from behind to win The U.S. Amateur!

She returned home to the nickname “Little Ben,” after winning the 1953 British Amateur Championship, the very same year the great legend Ben Hogan won “The Open” at Carnoustie. Hogan was widely admired for a technically precise swing, a quiet intensity and an unrivaled will to win. Marlene embodied those same characteristics and wore the nickname proudly.

At the 1956 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, Stewart Streit was down by four holes after the 20th hole in the 36-hole final, but fought back. She won the 29th, 30th and 32nd holes to take the lead. On the decisive 35th hole, she sank a 12-foot putt to win. The much taller and stronger Jo-Anne Gunderson out hit Stewart Streit all day. Stewart Streit recalls hitting fairway woods into greens while Gunderson was hitting short irons. Marlene exhibited her trademark attributes. She just never gave up, played her own game, relying on a deadly accurate short game to become the first native-born Canadian Champion in the more than half-century of the tournament. Gunderson was quick to praise her opponent as a wonderful sport and a great champion.

Marlene’s ability to concentrate and get the job done is unparalleled. To excel in match play (which is synonymous with top level amateur golf) you have to know how to win; not something easily taught. It comes from within. Marlene Stewart Streit found her winning formula and appeared reluctant to let it go.

1956 produced 8 tournament wins for Stewart Streit who was named U.S. Woman Golfer of the Year.
