"The King"

"That Krol's terrific. He does everything but blow the whistle. He tosses touchdown passes, catches 'em, converts 'em and punts 'em a mile. Once I look up and he's kicking off, then I hear a crash and I look around and there's Krol burying the receiver." - Red Burnett, Toronto Daily Star, Mon., Dec. 2, 1946, after Toronto Argonauts Grey Cup win Nov. 30.

Joe "King" Krol was the engine at the centre of the Toronto Argonauts 'golden era' and from 1945 to 1952 he helped the Boatmen to five Grey Cups. He was that rare and exceptional talent who could perform just about any task on the gridiron with mastery: running, passing, catching and kicking. He was known as the triple threat that could snatch victory from defeat on offense, defense or on a special team.

The 1946 Grey Cup Game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Varsity Stadium was another great day at the office that showcased his versatility. He threw three touchdown passes and hauled in a 30 yard pass, avoiding blockers to run it in for a major. He booted a well-placed on-side kick that was recovered to set-up yet another touchdown. For his last touchdown, Krol faked an end run, wheeling to his right and connecting with Leo Deadey on a 52 yard pass to the Winnipeg 12 yard line. On the very next play, Krol faded to his left, and fired a pass to Boris Tipoff all alone on the right side of the end zone for the major. Toronto trounced Winnipeg for their second consecutive Grey Cup.

Former teammates Fred Doty, Nick Volpe and Charlie Camilleri among others consider "King" Krol not just one of the finest Argos but one of the greatest that ever played Canadian football.
